Overview
Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and an ideal acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro. Located in Arusha National Park, this dormant stratovolcano offers an adventurous, scenic, and wildlife-rich trekking experience. Over four days, you'll hike through lush rainforests, alpine moorlands, and dramatic ridgelines, summiting Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters for a breathtaking sunrise view of Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is less crowded and provides the unique experience of trekking inside a national park, often encountering giraffes, buffalos, zebras, and monkeys on foot—escorted by an armed ranger for safety.
DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
Drive: 1.5–2 hours from Arusha to Momella Gate
Hike Duration: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
Highlights: Game viewing (zebra, giraffe, buffalo), waterfalls
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut (full board)
Begin your adventure with a scenic drive to Arusha National Park. After park formalities, start your trek through lush forest, spotting wildlife along the way. Reach Miriakamba Hut for a restful overnight stay.
Hike Duration: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Highlights: Views of Meru crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, Little Meru hike (optional)
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Continue ascending through open moorland and misty forest to Saddle Hut. After lunch, hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization and stunning panoramic views.
Hike Duration: 10–12 hours (summit + descent)
Habitat: Alpine desert and montane forest
Highlights: Summit sunrise, dramatic crater ridge walk
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Start your summit push at midnight. The trail ascends steeply along a narrow crater ridge to Socialist Peak, arriving in time for sunrise. Enjoy spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater before descending back to Saddle, then Miriakamba for overnight rest.
Hike Duration: 2–3 hours
Drive: 1.5–2 hours back to Arusha or Moshi
Highlights: Scenic descent, wildlife spotting
Descend through Meru’s lush forest trail, passing waterfalls and wildlife. Receive your summit certificate at Momella Gate, then transfer back to your hotel.
