From Forest to Crater Rim: 7-Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Trek

7

days

Overview

As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.
After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.

  • Duration: 7 – 8 days
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Scenery: Excellent
  • Traffic: Medium

Conquer Kilimanjaro: 7-Day Lemosho Route Adventure (Arrival & Departure Included)

Day by Day Trekking Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) greeted by a friendly Adventreksafari representative.
Transfer comfortably to your accommodation at Panama Garden Resort in Moshi (overnight stay with breakfast).
Relax and enjoy amenities like a swimming pool and Wi-Fi. Attend an evening briefing with experienced managers to ensure you're prepared for the climb.
Depart Moshi for a 3-hour drive through villages to Lemosho Gate in Kilimanjaro National Park. Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and challenging muddy trails. Gaiters and poles are recommended. Your guide shares insights on local flora and fauna as you hike 3-4 hours, gaining 396m in elevation, to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Expect cooler temperatures at this higher altitude.
After breakfast, embark on a steeper ascent, leaving the rainforest behind. Hike for 4-6 hours, gaining 719m in elevation, and enjoy widening views reaching the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures will continue to drop as you reach Shira I Camp.
This day is crucial for acclimatization, though you'll end at a similar elevation as you began. Hike east from Shira Plateau, passing the Kibo peak junction before continuing to the Lava Tower (4,650m). Descend to Barranco Camp for the night, gaining only 91m in elevation.
Ascend a steep ridge to conquer the adventurous Barranco Wall, reaching the Karanga Valley. Witness the impressive agility of your crew navigating the wall. Hike for 4-5 hours, gaining 48m in elevation, before overnighting at Karanga Camp.
Continue uphill to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit with breathtaking summit views. This section offers a variety of angles to admire the peak. Enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for the challenging summit night.
Begin your summit attempt with an early morning start (midnight to 2 AM). This is the most demanding part of the trek, both mentally and physically. Ascend through scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim, witnessing a magnificent sunrise (faster hikers may see it from the summit). Continue for 1 hour on a snow-covered trail to reach the pinnacle - Uhuru Peak (5,895m)! Savor this incredible achievement, capturing photos and enjoying the moment. Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended for the loose gravel and volcanic ash terrain. Celebrate your accomplishment and enjoy your last night on the mountain.
After breakfast, participate in a farewell ceremony with your crew. Descend for 3-4 hours to Mweka Park Gate, receiving your well-deserved summit certificates. Expect warmer weather, muddier trails, and steeper descents. Gaiters and poles are again recommended. A vehicle will transfer you from the gate to Mweka village for lunch, followed by a drive back to your Moshi hotel (around 30 minutes). Relax, enjoy a hot shower, celebrate your triumph, and enjoy a final dinner before departure.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Check out by 11:00 AM (late check-out options may be available for an additional fee). Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight.
