Your Summit Chapter – 6 Days via the Timeless Marangu Route

6

days

Overview

The Marangu Route, often called the "Coca-Cola route," is the oldest path up Mount Kilimanjaro and one of the most popular ones. Opting for the Marangu route, you will repeat the very first successful Kilimanjaro summit by Hans Meyer that took place in 1889. The trail lies inside Kilimanjaro National Park, traversing all climatic zones of the mountain from tropical forest to alpine desert. Uniquely, it is the only route that offers dormitory-style huts for overnight stays.
Summit night from Kibo Hut is steep and passes Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak. It is a shorter route with a steeper incline and less time for acclimatization it tends to have a lower summit success rate. This is the only route where the ascent and descent route is shared, thus creating more traffic.

  • Duration: 5 or 6 days
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Scenery: Good
  • Traffic: High

Tour Highlights

  • Extra day for acclimatisation
  • High summit success rate (over 80%)
  • Classic Adventure! Hiking & Huts
  • More quiet route for the most adventurous experience
  • The descending follows the Marangu route

All-Inclusive Kilimanjaro: 6-Day Marangu Route Journey from Arrival to Descent

Day by Day Trekking Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) greeted by a Adventreksafari representative. Transfer to comfortable accommodation at Panama Garden Resort (overnight stay with breakfast). Enjoy amenities and attend an evening briefing with experienced managers to prepare for the climb.
Meet your guide and support crew for a pre-trek briefing at the hotel. Travel to Marangu Gate, the park entrance, and begin your trek through a lush rainforest (prepare for rain!). Reach Mandara Hut (2,720 meters) for your first night at altitude. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol/caffeine. Acclimatization Tip: Consider using altitude medication to ease potential altitude sickness symptoms.
Enjoy breakfast followed by a scenic trek to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). Witness breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi volcanoes. Embark on an afternoon acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut (200m elevation gain) before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner.
After breakfast, ascend towards Kibo Hut for another acclimatization hike and return to camp. Spend the afternoon exploring the area, relaxing, or preparing for the summit push.
Ascend to Kibo Hut (4,720 meters) after breakfast. Maintain a moderate pace to conserve energy for the summit climb. Enjoy lunch and rest upon reaching Kibo Hut, focusing on hydration and sleep.
Depart Kibo Hut pre-dawn and begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), Africa's highest point. Each climber will be paired with a personal guide for the challenging yet rewarding summit push. Descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
Important Note: Be extra cautious during the descent to avoid injuries.
Enjoy breakfast and descend to Marangu Gate, the park exit. Celebrate with your fellow climbers and receive summit certificates. Relax at Panama Garden Resort (overnight stay with lunch included) before transferring to the airport for your departure.
Additional Notes
Remember to bring appropriate gear for all weather conditions. Maintain a slow and steady pace throughout the climb to aid acclimatization. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Be aware of the risks of altitude sickness and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Check out by 11:00 AM (late check-out options may be available for an additional fee). Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight.
