Overview
Mount Meru is a stunning dormant volcano located inside Arusha National Park, standing as the second-highest mountain in Tanzania. This 3-day trek is a perfect pre-Kilimanjaro acclimatization hike or a standalone adventure for hikers short on time but eager for a true high-altitude experience.
The climb offers an exceptional blend of wildlife viewing, lush forests, dramatic ridgelines, and an unforgettable sunrise summit over Mount Kilimanjaro from Socialist Peak (4,566m).
DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
Drive: 1.5–2 hours from Arusha/Moshi
Hike Duration: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: ~1,000m
Habitat: Montane forest
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, transfer to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Your trek begins with an armed ranger escort, walking through scenic forest trails filled with wildlife—giraffes, monkeys, buffaloes, and more. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Hike Duration: 10–12 hours (including summit)
Elevation Gain: ~1,066m to the summit, then descent
Habitat: Heathland, alpine desert
Highlights: Little Meru (optional), Socialist Peak sunrise, crater views
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Wake up early and hike to Saddle Hut, stopping briefly for snacks and acclimatization. From here, push on to Socialist Peak (4,566m), aiming to reach the summit at sunrise. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru Crater, and the Ash Cone before descending back to Miriakamba Hut for rest.
Hike Duration: 2–3 hours
Drive: Return transfer to hotel
Highlights: Scenic descent, wildlife viewing
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest trail to Momella Gate. Collect your Mount Meru summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
